If you are unsure whether you need a hire car where you are staying, then typically apartments are near to built-up areas full of shops, bars and restaurants but villas tend to be in more outlying and remote areas.
Although most accommodation will have some facilities nearby, you lose a lot of flexibility and are restricting your choices dramatically without your own transport – especially if you want to explore the area or are a bit of a distance from the beaches.
If you want to collect your rent a car from the airport it is better to book in advance as this saves time on arrival and also means that any extras you need (child seats, etc) are fitted beforehand. Nowadays prebooking also often gets you the better deal as with all the competition the agencies like to get the booking secured as soon as they can.
Driving times from Santiago are: León 4 hours: Valladolid 6 hours 45 minutes and Madrid 6 hours.
If you are planning on doing the Camino de Santiago Pilgrims' Walk you can catch a train from San Sebastian which takes about 11 hours or you can catch an overnight bus which takes between 11-13 hours.
If you drive you can take the direct but slower route because of minor roads which takes about 8 hours or you can follow the coastline which is about a 730km journey taking 7hours 30 minutes via Bilbao, Santander and Gijon.
