In the last two decades Spain has experienced huge growth in the number of passengers it serves from it's many airports.
This had lead to over optimism in the develop of airports..in particular Covera and Castellon Airports which after 100's millions of Euros of investment are little more than "ghost" airports...with no flights!
Of course low cost airlines have helped with the growth and Easyjet, Ryanair & Veuling are 3 companies that have certainly pioneered the way for others.
Ryanair is flying into some little known areas and airports...but of course if the routes are not profitable they leave just as quickly...Vitoria in north west Spain is an example of that.
The principal airports are the ones we all know...Madrid of course, Barcelona, Palma De Mallorca, Malaga and Alicante .All of which have enjoyed huge refurbishment programs in the last 5 years and are as modern and efficient as any airports in Europe.
In the 15 years that I have been flying in and out of Spanish Airports (Malaga in particular) I have seen a real lift in the quality of the facilities on offer....the big changes have not been reserved for the shopping and restaurant but the one that stands out for me is the assistance given to less abled passengers....it is second to none!
I know for a fact that car hire in Spain is a huge business....bigger than the UK for example...this is driven partly because we are all comfortable driving in Europe now and partly because the roads and getting around is relatively easy.
This in turn has made car hire extremely affordable...especially in the quieter months when I look at the prices and wonder how they can offer it so cheaply!
All in all...travelling to Spain from the UK, Ireland or anywhere from Northern Europe is easier and cheaper than ever...Russia is the next growth area...with flights into Malaga from Russia growing and growing.
Hopefully our guide will take away some of the stress and worry about travelling to this beautiful country...buen viaje!
