There is a new modern two storey terminal building which has just opened at Gibraltar Airport. It is very different from the very old and tired looking one (no longer in use) as it is very bight and airy, constructed mainly from glass and steel.
It is a military run airport and also used for army manoeuvres so don't be surprised if you can't cross the border into Spain as the runway (which runs right across it) is closed for the troops! No military aircraft are stationed here, but there are regular visits.
There have been many attempts in the past few years for more airlines to operate from this airport but none of them have got off the ground. You can currently fly with several UK airlines to destinations including London Luton Gatwick and Heathrow, Manchester, Liverpool and Nottingham East Midlands airports. If you are staying on the Costa del Sol in the Marbella area, then Gibraltar Airport is equidistant to Malaga and is worth checking if you are travelling from one of the above UK airports.
The only drawback of flying into or our of Gibraltar is that because the Mediterranean Sea joins the Atlantic at the Strait the weather can be unpredictable and there are sometimes problems with landing or taking off as the Rock is covered in fog and flights can be diverted.
Because Gibraltar is such a small airport it is much easier to travel from than Malaga (if you can get the flights) with less people, quick secutiry clearance, no queuing, etc.
There are plenty of buses outside the airport terminal to take you into the centre of Gibraltar, cruise port or marina. It is not worth trying to drive a car in the town centre as it is full of narrow winding roads which only allow a limited amount of traffic. There is a large car park next to Main Street which is the centrla shopping area.
If you want to explore the Rock and get to the best beaches over the other side then a car is your best bet. If you want to see the Apes then a tour guide/taxi is the better option.
