Induction Loops for hearing impaired at Spanish Airports

May 10th, 2012

The Spanish Airport Authority (Aena) has installed magnetic induction loops to improve accessibility for the hearing impaired. 250 computers have been installed with both fixed and portable induction systems with headsets that allow the user to receive clear information.

To use this service the hearing aid wearer should go to a point of care at the airport (identified with a blue sign with the international hearing aids symbol “T” position) located at information desks and service counters to assist passengers with reduced mobility. The user can capture all information provided by placing the headset in position “T”.

Aena airports also have an Information Service and Telephone Answering that has a specific line for hearing impaired passengers and / or speaking. This service allows users with disabilities to contact the Information Service and Telephone Service from your mobile phone, in text mode and in real time.

Less Passengers Using Alicante Airport

May 2nd, 2012

The budget airline Ryanair has released details of the passenger losses suffered by Alicante El Altet Airport since they cut their flights after failing to reach agreement with Aena over the imposition of air bridges and increased passenger charges.

For the five months from November 2011 to March 2012 the Irish Airline says that 236,000 fewer Ryanair passengers have used the airport. Other airlines have also cut their passenger numbers by over 32,000.

Ryanair claim that AENA Alicante with its high charges and air bridges, are turning away not just Ryanair’s low fare passengers, but also the traffic of other airlines. AENA claimed that other airlines would make up for Ryanair’s traffic loss.

Ryanair said: “It is not too late for Alicante to withdraw this air bridge policy and allow Ryanair to return to walk on/walk off boarding procedures which applied to all Ryanair flights at Alicante from 2007 until 2011. If they don’t then AENA Alicante will continue to lose routes, traffic and jobs through their own mismanagement”.

Spanish Pilots Strike Suspended

May 1st, 2012

The Spanish government has intervened to help resolve the dispute between Iberia and its pilots over the new Iberia Express, imposing a compulsory arbitration order on both parties. This means that strike action every Monday and Friday by members of the SEPLA Pilots union was immediately suspended.

Since last December 2011 the pilots have staged 12 days of strike action, with additional action planned every Monday and Friday until July 20th. The Spanish tourism sector was increasingly alarmed by the negative effects of the ongoing strike, and urged “forceful” government intervention.

The government action is permitted by Spanish law and is intended to end a strike that is costing significant revenue and adversely impacting customers. Iberia have reinstated flights cancelled on future planned strike days and said it was pleased the SEPLA pilots union had called off the strike. So far the 12 strike days are estimated to have cost the airline around €36 million euros.
