Corvera Airport Murcia
UPDATE MARCH 2012: The new Corvera Airport in Murcia has suffered another delay with summer 2013 now being put as the earliest date it can be operational.
The President of the Murcia Government said that a thousand technical requirements and approval of the equipment used still has to be carried out and he does not want an airport with no planes, as occurred Castellon. The sacking of boss Luis del Rivero from constructors Sacyr has also slowed down the paperwork in Madrid.
Meanwhile the Spanish Airport Authority AENA has announced 22 extra flights this summer from the

Murcia San Javier airport.Corvera Airport is due to open in April next year and will be the only commercial airport operating in the Murcia Region. No specific date can yet be given as it depends on how quickly the paperwork can be processed to give the airport the full certification it needs to become legally operational.
It is being managed by the Spanish Airports Authority (Aena) and will handle all the passenger traffic which is currently flying to and from Murcia San Javier Airport which will revert to being a military aircraft base as soon as Corvera is up and running
Construction of the airport is well under way with the main terminal building structure in place and glass doors and windows fitted, air conditioning, heating.escalators and electrical trunking installed, along with many fixtures and fittings including toilets and lights. Conveyor belts, check in desks and passport control are installed with a pile of luggage sitting in the baggage reclaim area being used for testing purposes on the conveyor belts and luggage transfer systems.
Works are now taking place to provide parking for 1800 vehicles, external landscaping and features which are all expected to be completed early in 2012. It will then take several months for the necessary aviation safety tests to be made before it can open.
There is no indication as to which operators will be using Corvera Airport or scheduling new routes to build into their existing timetables. The volume of traffic Corvera Airport will handle depends on tourism developments within the region. If the Paramount Theme Park goes ahead as planned passenger volumes should rise to the projected 3 million a year which will make the airport financially viable.
